KIM BOCK QUARTET

Strongly melodic lines….Bock and his band, a force to be reckoned with”

Steve Futterman – Barnes & Noble

The uptempo numbers gush…piercing echoes and delicate counterlines”

Forrest Dylan Bryant - Jazztimes

The Kim Bock Quartet brings four talented and highly experienced New York-based jazz musicians together since 2005. All the music is written by Kim Bock especially for this group and draws on a multitude of influences from artist dating back to the 60’s like Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman to contemporary musicians like Joe Lovano and David Douglas. The music stretches from modal section to complex chord progressions, including odd meter rhythms.

The choice to form a chord-less quartet, leads to an open and expansive sound, where the individual instruments interplay and interact to a higher degree than in a regular jazz group. For instance, the bass plays a very active role in outlining harmonies and the sax and trumpet play both composed and on-the-spot improvised counterlines.

Kim Bock’s countless performances, studies with a number of eminent contemporary jazz instrumentalists (Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Rich Perry and Billy Pierce) as well as ongoing tours in the US & Europe, have all contributed to his standing as a highly respected jazz artist. Also an alumni of legendary Maynard Ferguson’s band, Kim has two bestseller jazz teaching book published worldwide on Mel Bay Publications.

David Smith - Fresh Sound recording artist. An exceedingly sought-after trumpet player on the New York scene. David just recorded his debut album as a leader for Fresh Sound with his own stellar quintet, which includes Seamus Blake on tenor saxophone. He has also made a number of recordings including a national broadcast on the CBC radio in Canada, and recordings for Fresh Sound with Delphian Jazz Orchestra and Alan Ferber Nonet.

Adam Armstrong appears on more that 60 albums and has performed with Billy Cobham, Kenny Wheeler, Kenny Kirkland, Maria Schneider and countless other jazz greats. A highly valued player, Adam is staying extremely busy with tours and recordings worldwide.

Peter Retzlaff - a highly regarded veteran on the New York scene. Peter has played with Kenny Werner, Greg Osby, Diane Schuur, Gary Versace and many more. Furthermore, Peter is a very experienced clinician and on the faculty at The Drummers Collective, New York. In addition, Peter is the author of a drum method book, Contemporary jazz styles for the drums published by Carl Fisher Publications.
